Print Description

Hop-Frog's Revenge Hop-Frog's Revenge by James Ensor - 1898.

The bizarre scene in this meticulously crafted etching is based on a short story written in 1845 by Edgar Allan Poe, one of Ensor’s favorite authors. The story recounts the revenge of a court jester, a crippled dwarf named Hop-Frog, against an unjust king and his seven corrupt ministers. On the occasion of a masquerade ball, Hop-Frog persuades the king, who loves practical jokes, to play a trick on his guests by disguising himself and his ministers as orangutans. Ensor has depicted the story’s final scene, in which Hop-Frog arranges to have the ministers and the king chained together in a ring, hooked up to a chandelier, and hoisted above the party. Hop-Frog then uses a torch to set the eight on fire in full view of the horrified crowd. - MOMA

Print Description

In 1889, James Ensor took on religion, politics, and art in this scene of Christ entering contemporary Brussels in a Mardi Gras parade.

Ensor's society is a mob, threatening to trample the viewer - a crude, ugly, chaotic, dehumanized sea of masks, frauds, clowns, and caricatures. Public, historical, and allegorical figures, along with the artist's family and friends, make up the crowd. The haloed Christ at the center of the turbulence is in part a self-portrait: mostly ignored, a precarious, isolated visionary amidst the herdlike masses of modern society. Ensor's Christ functions as a political spokesman for the poor and oppressed--a humble leader of the true religion, in opposition to the atheist social reformer Emile Littré, shown in bishop's garb holding a drum major's baton and leading on the eager, mindless crowd.

After rejection by Les XX, the artists' association that Ensor had helped to found, the painting was not exhibited publicly until 1929. Ensor displayed Christ's Entry prominently in his home and studio throughout his life. With its aggressive, painterly style and merging of the public with the deeply personal, Christ's Entry was a forerunner of twentieth-century Expressionism.

James Ensor

We've lovely prints and cards of paintings and illustration by Belgian artist James Ensor (13 April 1860 – 19 November 1949). Esnor, a painter printmaker, was associated with the artistic group Les XX. His art turns the everyday into something strange, wonderful and unsettling.

Ensor left school at the age of fifteen to train with two local artists. From 1877 to 1880, he attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.

Ensor's work was rejected for being scandalous, particularly his work Christ's Entry Into Brussels. The Belgian art critic Octave Maus said of him: "Ensor is the leader of a clan. Ensor is the limelight. Ensor sums up and concentrates certain principles which are considered to be anarchistic. In short, Ensor is a dangerous person who has great changes... He is consequently marked for blows. It is at him that all the harquebuses are aimed. It is on his head that are dumped the most aromatic containers of the so-called serious critics.... Ensor is a Madman."
