Collection: Morris Hirshfield Prints & Cards
Morris Hirshfield (1872–1946) was a Polish-American painter. Prints of his work are now available in the shop.
Born in Poland, the artist emigrated to the United States at the age of eighteen. He worked at a women's coat factory before manufacturing women's coats, suits and slippers. In 1935 he retired.
Hirshfield began painting in 1937. Gallery owner Sidney Janis featured some of Morris Hirshfield's art in the 1939 exhibition Contemporary Unknown American Painters and the 1942 book They Taught Themselves: American Primitive Painters of the 20th Century.
Hirshfield received a one-man show at the Museum of Modern Art in 1943.
