The Equinox of The Gods by Randy Salas - 1967
Print Description
Print of a poster for The Equinox of the Gods by Randy Salas (Designer) at the Straight Theater (San Francisco, Calif.) - 1967.
Poster advertises Thursday, Sept. 21 [1967], 8:30 P.M. show at the Straight Theater, 1702 Haight, by Kenneth Anger, [presented by] the Bringers of Light & the Straight Theater.
The avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger, once a Hollywood child-actor, is a disciple of the occultist Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) and regards the presentation of his films as occult ceremonies that can awaken spiritual forces in his audience. He is the author of the notorious Hollywood Babylon (San Francisco, 1975), which told the stories and originated several of the myths of sex scandals, crimes, and the anti-Communist "blacklist" involving Hollywood celebrities from the early 1900s through the mid-1960s. Originally published in French (Paris, 1959), the book first appeared in English in a pirated, incomplete edition in 1965, and its distribution was banned by U.S. postal authorities. - NYPL

Empire Marketing Board, poster by Paul Nash - 1930
Print Description
Empire Marketing Board poster by Paul Nash - 1930.
The Empire Marketing Board (EMB) was founded in May 1926, as a small government body with committees for research, marketing and publicity. Much of its effort went into encouraging research and analysis, including into how to improve the quality, storage and distribution of British and colonial produce.
It was set up with the Secretary of State for the Colonies (then Leopold Amery) as its Chairman, with a civil servant (Stephen Tallents, Sir Stephen from 1932) as its Secretary.
But it also employed people from the media, advertising and commercial world more generally, as well as giving commissions to some of the most talented poster artists of the day.

This drawing is attributed to Dorothea Maria Gsell, daughter of artist and scientist, Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). In 1699, she and her mother traveled to Suriname to draw all sorts of exotic animals. Dorothea successfully rendered the bright red-orange plumage of the scarlet ibis by applying several layers of opaque paint. - via Rijksmuseum

Whale by Johann Anderson, I.V.D. - 1746
Print Description
Mr. Johann Anderson, I.V.D. and Weyland First Mayor of Freyen Imperial City of Hamburg, News from Iceland, Greenland and the Davis Strait, for the true benefit of science and action.
Hamburg: Published by Georg Christian Grund, Buchdr., 1746
Johann Anderson (1674-1743) was the son of a whaling ship owner from Hamburg, Germany. He became a lawyer, served in the Hamburg Senate, and was mayor of the city for many years. Anderson systematically gathered the available literature on Iceland, Greenland, and the adjacent seas, as well as gleaned information from sailors and merchants. This book, which he prepared mainly in the 1730s, was published in 1746, after his death. It includes descriptions of the land and peoples of Iceland and Greenland, and covers topics ranging from the herring fishery to the volumes of oil produced by different species of whales. Although he was wrong on some points, Anderson made scientific contributions in a number of areas. He developed a system for classifying species of whales and made estimates of commercial marine stocks that prefigured later work in fisheries biology. Appended to the work was a grammar and vocabulary of the Inuit language spoken on Greenland, and a selection of extracts from religious texts presented in German, Danish, and Inuit. Anderson’s book was valued throughout Europe, and was translated into and published in Danish (1748), Dutch (1750), and French (1750).
