Troops Resting by Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson - 1916
Print Description
Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson - A.R.A. Troops Resting - 1916.
While the Italian Futurists glorified warfare, Nevinson, the only British Futurist, did not, especially after his time on the front. In his autobiography, he wrote that he made war images "without pageantry, without glory, and without the over-coloured heroic that had made up the tradition of all war paintings up to this time. . . . No man saw pageantry in the trenches."
In Troops Resting, French soldiers wear the distinctive steel Adrian helmets of 1915, whose circular form is repeated in their kits, supplies, and food. The work makes visible the mental and physical exhaustion of the French army, which had suffered enormous losses by 1916. - The Met

Great War Image From the Shahnameh by Ferdowsi - c. 977-1010
Print Description
Great War image from the Shahnameh - a long epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi for Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni between c. 977 and 1010 - Wellcome.
The seminal work of Persian literature is the Shahnameh, an epic poem that recounts the history of pre-Islamic Persia or Iranshahr (Greater Iran). The Shahnameh contains 62 stories, told in 990 chapters with 50,000 rhyming couplets. It is divided into three parts—the mythical, heroic, and historical ages. Written in modern Persian, the Shahnameh is a work of poetry, historiography, folklore, and cultural identity and is a continuation of the age-old tradition of storytelling in the Near East.
Under the patronage of the Samanid dynasty, Hakīm Abul-Qāsim Firdawsī Tūsī (Ferdowsi) began his epic poem in 977, taking thirty-three years to complete it. The Shahnameh was written at a time when modern Persian had started to flourish and the structures and standards for the language were being set.
After its first appearance in 1010, the Shahnameh directly affected the epic and poetic works of all Persian speakers and writers for centuries. A number of scholars credit the continuity in modern Persian to the Shahnameh. It influenced not just Persian speakers but also the cultures of Turkic peoples in Central Asia, Azerbaijan, and the Ottoman Empire, as well as the Georgian, Kurdish, and Pashto literary traditions. The Shahnameh continues to be one of the main pillars of the modern Persian language. - LoC

Print Description
Copy after Charles E. Stacy Sitter by William Frederick Cody - 1900.
To a great promoter like Colonel William F. Cody, the semireligious phrase "I Am Coming" required larger letters on this poster than the identification of the face that everyone would already recognize. Cody, originally a frontier scout, Indian fighter, and buffalo hunter, had become famous as the hero of "Buffalo Bill" dime novels and magazine stories. In 1882 he created his popular wild west show and toured as its star for thirty years, arguably doing more than any single American to popularize the myth of the West. Combining sharpshooting, riding, and roping with historical reenactments of war dances, buffalo hunts, stagecoach attacks, and "Custer's Last Fight," Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show had enormous international appeal. In fact, this copy of the poster, bearing a French tax stamp (top right), is a testament to his extremely successful tours in France. - National Portrait Gallery

Zuni by John K. Hillers - c. 1879-1881
Print Description
Zuni - 1879_81 by John K. Hillers (1843–1925).
John Karl Hillers (1843, Hanover, Germany – 1925) was an American government photographer.
Hillers came to the United States in 1852. He was a policeman and then a soldier in the American Civil War, first with the New York Naval Brigade,[2] then in the army, he re-enlisted after the war and served with the Western garrisons until 1870. He worked as a teamster in Salt Lake City, when he met John Wesley Powell.
Originally hired as a boatman for the second Powell expedition down the Colorado River in 1871, Hillers began to replace Walter Clement Powell, John W. Powell's cousin and assistant to the expedition's photographers, first to E.O. Beaman[3] and then to James Fennemore.[4]
Hillers was Powell's chief expedition photographer on the trip down the Grand Canyon the next year.
He went on to spend twenty years exploring and photographing the American West, and is known particularly for his portraits of Native Americans.

It is one of a group of pictures he painted during the First World War of searchlights along the Thames, a subject which appealed to his celebration of the modern. - Christie's
