Eric William Ravilious (22 July 1903 – 2 September 1942) was an English painter, designer, book illustrator and wood engraver.

Ravilious studied at Eastbourne School of Art, and at the Royal College of Art, where he studied under Paul Nash.

He married Eileen Lucy "Tirzah" Garwood who was also a noted artist and engraver.

His early works depicted the countryside around him in the south east of England, as well as urban scenes of London. Many of his works are seen as capturing a sense of Englishness that existed between the wars.

He designed a number of popular pieces for Wedgwood between l936 and l940 including a commemorative mug originally produced for the Coronation of Edward VIII which was adapted for that of George V. Ravilious was an official war artist in World War II and received a commission as a Captain in the Royal Marines.

He was killed in 1942 at the age of 39 while accompanying a Royal Air Force air sea rescue mission off Iceland that failed to return to its base.

He is commemorated by blue plaques in Hammersmith and Eastbourne.

Early Morning by Samuel Palmer - 1825

              Print Description

Early Morning by Samuel Palmer - 1825.

The picture shows a path running through a wood, near Shoreham in Kent, the out-of-town village that the young London artist had made into his personal rural paradise. It is first light. The sun rises behind the big, silhouetted tree, but deep shadows cling on. The scene takes a moment to come clear, as its dense sepia browns and gleaming golden whites resolve into recognisable objects...

Palmer believes in individuality to the end. Each bit of creation has its iconic character, distinctly outlined. Delineated within their dark contours, nature's elements glow like the fragments of a stained glass window. - Tom Lubbock

New Year's Eve Foxfires at the Changing Tree, Ōji by Utagawa Hiroshige - ca. 1857

              Print Description

New Year's Eve Foxfires at the Changing Tree, Ōji by Utagawa Hiroshige - ca. 1857.

Foxes gather at the large, old enoki (hackberry) tree on New Year's Eve to prepare to pay homage at the Ōji Inari shrine, the headquarters of the Inari cult in eastern Japan (Kantō). The cult centers on the god of the rice field, for whom the fox serves as messenger. On the way to Ōji, the foxes have set a number of kitsunebi (foxfires), which farmers count to predict the upcoming rice harvest. Hiroshige's print successfully conveys the mysterious atmosphere of the rite as the procession of foxes bearing fires approaches from the distant, dark forest under a starry sky. - Met

The Foolish World Prefers the Temporary Good by Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert - 1575-1581

              Print Description

The foolish world prefers the temporary good, Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, after Hendrick Goltzius, 1575 - 1581.

The personification of the Foolish World (Sultus mundanus) wears the glasses of Wrong Belief (Opinio). She points out to him the shadow figure Lie (Mendacium) who comes with a bag full of worldly goods: wealth, gluttony, sensual love and power. In exchange for this temporary good, Foolish World offers his heart, while standing with one leg in the grave and the other on an hourglass, which symbolises the temporality of human existence. The personification of Truth (Veritas) tries to change the mind of Foolish World with a crucifix, but in vain - Rijksmuseum
