What A Woman May Be And Yet Not Have The Vote - 1912

    Print Description

This propagandist poster was designed and printed at the Suffrage Atelier in Shepherd's Bush, west London. The Atelier, a group of artists who used art to promote the Votes for Women campaign, was founded in London in February 1909, the aim being 'to encourage Artists to forward the Women's Movement, and particularly the Enfranchisement of Women, by means of pictorial publications.'

The poster contrasts representations of 'worthy' females denied the vote, such as teachers and factory workers, with 'unworthy' males, such as convicts and lunatics, who had the right to vote. C. 1912.

Anarchist by Felix Vallotton - 1892

        Print Description

Anarchist by Felix Vallotton - 1892.

Félix Vallotton (December 28, 1865 – December 29, 1925), the Swiss-born artist naturalized as a French citizen in 1900, was a painter of luxurious sunsets and a printmaker, notably working with woodcuts. He was influenced hugely by Japanese woodcuts – an exhibition of ukiyo-e prints had been presented at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1890. Vallotton, like many artists of his era, including Vincent Van Gogh, was an enthusiastic collector of Japanese prints.

These Vallotton woodcuts illustrate the book Félix Vallotton; Biographie by German novelist and art critic Julius Meier-Graefe (June 10, 1867 – June 5, 1935), published in 1898 by Edmond Sagot and J. A. Stargardt of Berlin and Paris, respectively. They deal with the everyday, social unrest and anarchistic violence, and intimate love scenes. And they are beautiful. - Paul Sorene

        Christ's_Entry_into_Brussels_in_1889

        Print Description

In 1889, James Ensor took on religion, politics, and art in this scene of Christ entering contemporary Brussels in a Mardi Gras parade.

Ensor's society is a mob, threatening to trample the viewer - a crude, ugly, chaotic, dehumanized sea of masks, frauds, clowns, and caricatures. Public, historical, and allegorical figures, along with the artist's family and friends, make up the crowd. The haloed Christ at the center of the turbulence is in part a self-portrait: mostly ignored, a precarious, isolated visionary amidst the herdlike masses of modern society. Ensor's Christ functions as a political spokesman for the poor and oppressed--a humble leader of the true religion, in opposition to the atheist social reformer Emile Littré, shown in bishop's garb holding a drum major's baton and leading on the eager, mindless crowd.

After rejection by Les XX, the artists' association that Ensor had helped to found, the painting was not exhibited publicly until 1929. Ensor displayed Christ's Entry prominently in his home and studio throughout his life. With its aggressive, painterly style and merging of the public with the deeply personal, Christ's Entry was a forerunner of twentieth-century Expressionism.
