A Sea of Steps at Wells Cathedral, Stairs to Chapter House and Bridge to Vicar's Close by Frederick H. Evans - 1903

Print Description

'A Sea of Steps,' Wells Cathedral, Stairs to Chapter House and Bridge to Vicar's Close by Frederick H. Evans - 1903

The stunning Wells Cathedral: A Sea of Steps is one of some 200 Evans photographs in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. Produced in 1903, the image captures the stairs to the Cathedral’s chapter house, and the bridge to the vicar’s close. The angles seem odd, the composition almost abstract. As Evans himself described it:

The steps now rise steeply before one, and the extraordinary wear in the top portions leading to the corridor, is now shown just as it appeals to the eye in the original subject, a veritable sea of steps. The passing over them of hundreds of footsteps during the many years the stair has served its purpose have worn them into a semblance of broken waves, low-beating on a placid shore. The beautiful curve of the steps on the right as they rise to the height of the Chapter House floor, is for all the world like the surge of a great wave that will presently break and subside into smaller ones. - National Gallery of Canada

Christ's_Entry_into_Brussels_in_1889

Print Description

In 1889, James Ensor took on religion, politics, and art in this scene of Christ entering contemporary Brussels in a Mardi Gras parade.

Ensor's society is a mob, threatening to trample the viewer - a crude, ugly, chaotic, dehumanized sea of masks, frauds, clowns, and caricatures. Public, historical, and allegorical figures, along with the artist's family and friends, make up the crowd. The haloed Christ at the center of the turbulence is in part a self-portrait: mostly ignored, a precarious, isolated visionary amidst the herdlike masses of modern society. Ensor's Christ functions as a political spokesman for the poor and oppressed--a humble leader of the true religion, in opposition to the atheist social reformer Emile Littré, shown in bishop's garb holding a drum major's baton and leading on the eager, mindless crowd.

After rejection by Les XX, the artists' association that Ensor had helped to found, the painting was not exhibited publicly until 1929. Ensor displayed Christ's Entry prominently in his home and studio throughout his life. With its aggressive, painterly style and merging of the public with the deeply personal, Christ's Entry was a forerunner of twentieth-century Expressionism.

The Temperate and the Intemperate by Master of the Dresden Prayer Book - c.1475

Print Description

The new Master of the Dresden Prayer Book (Flemish, active about 1480 - 1515) - The Temperate and the Intemperate, ca. 1475.

'The anonymous illuminator known as the Master of the Dresden Prayer Book was a painter of tremendous originality. Named after a book of hours now in Dresden, he worked in Bruges from around 1465 until about 1515. At a time when artists favored elaborate costumes and contrived postures, this illuminator gave his figures a sweeter, more innocent quality. He had an uncanny ability to locate the humor or irony in a familiar story, and he showed particular sympathy for coarse or simple characters. The novelty of his colors--including bright oranges, teals, burgundies, rich blues, and sometimes black--often arranged in surprising combinations, further attests to the refreshing originality of his art.'
